I'm sorry, Joshua...

The Stray Dog is an enemy and the final boss in Rule of Rose during the "Stray Dog and the Lying Princess" chapter. He is the boss form of Gregory M. Wilson.

Appearance[]

Stray Dog is a unclothed Gregory in white underwear. He bear several red scratches, injuries, and rope-like burn markings all over his pale body, implying self-harm or abuse. Around his neck is a noose, which Wendy drags like a leash. He has a dazed-like expression, and moves and attacks on all fours like a dog, using no weapons other than his hands, which perform mostly lunge and claw-like attacks.

BrownStrayDog

Brown confronts Stray Dog.

He is noticeably larger and bigger than a real human man, possibly symbolizing how Gregory looked to Jennifer when she was a child during the orphanage massacre: imposing, frightening and scary.

Rule of Rose[]

Stray Dog began as a rumor created by Wendy, as described in the chapter's storybook. Her reasoning is unknown, but speculated to be attention. Eventually, the rumor was spread through the orphanage by children. The rumor also led to the foundation of the Red Crayon Aristocrat Club. This subsequently led to another rumor: "The park is dangerous after dark. You'll be eaten by stray dogs. People who are eaten are confined to a zeppelin in the sky and can never leave."

Wendy (as Joshua) ordering Stray Dog.

After Jennifer dethrones Wendy, the young girl disguised herself as Joshua and confronted Gregory. For several weeks, she would train the man into a monster. Martha at one point saw one of these training sessions and attempted to contact police. However, her words were taken for granted. Once all the adults were gone, Wendy returned which had the aristocrats confront her.

Unbeknownst to them, the now-real Stray Dog was there. He proceeded to kill anyone who dared approach. As Jennifer hears the screams from outside, the front doors to the orphanage open. Wendy points forward, commanding he attack. Thus begins a grueling fight between Jennifer and Gregory.

After the return of Brown, both Jennifer and him rush outside. Here, Wendy begins to feel remorseful for her actions. She apologies for what she had done to Jennifer and everyone else. At this, she gives the girl Gregory's gun as the man proceeds to grab her. With Wendy now dead, he aimlessly attacks. The player may either kill him or simply return the gun to him. In the latter case, he will promptly shoot himself.

Rule of Rose - Walkthrough (PCSX2) - Part 38 (Final Boss)

Jennifer versus Stray Dog.

In thanks to the boss' slow movements, it is relatively easy to deal with compared to Hoffman's. Because there are no other enemies during this chapter and the boss' predictable movements, players will typically only die once at most. Even so, because of the cutscenes and there being two phases, it takes longer to finish.

  • If emulating, use a Widescreen Hack or setting depending on the emulator. This will make it easier to see and dodge his attacks.
  • It is recommended to use the Lumberjack Axe against him in both phases.
  • Run around in circles to dodge him all the times. Keep a loop of hitting once and then running away, waiting for when he's done attacking. It's best to hit him from the side.
  • Watch for his rearing animation when standing next to him. This is his strongest attack and can lead to Jennifer being stunned on the ground.
  • In the first encounter, the player can easily beat him by using the Lumberjack Axe.
  • In the second encounter, the player can either use the Lumberjack Axe again to kill him to achieve the bad ending, or use Gregory's Gun when he kneels and says "I'm sorry, Joshua" to achieve the good ending (select "use" on the inventory screen).
    • Do not equip gun.
  • As always, be sure to stock up on health items via the Rubbish Bin.
  • Health item wise, there will be a lollipop on the cupboard of the first bedroom. Another one will be at the table where the aristocrat meeting is held.
