A farming tool with a fairly sharp edge.

The Shovel is a two-handed melee weapon in Rule of Rose. It is a farming tool that belonged to Gregory M. Wilson, a grieving pea farmer who lived at a home not far from the grounds of the Rose Garden Orphanage.

Background[]

The Orphanage was located in the surrounding British countryside, away from the outskirts of Cardington in Bedfordshire, England. The areas near the Orphanage were primarily rural, devoted to the cultivation of agriculture. One of these farmers was Gregory Wilson, who lived at a farmhouse with his late son, Joshua Wilson. Sometime in 1929, Wilson's son passed away due to an unknown terminal illness, and he has been unable to come to terms with his son's passing.

Later that same year, when Jennifer became the sole survivor of a crashed Airship, Gregory Wilson saved her. He brought her back to health at his farmhouse. Jennifer's experiences in the "Gingerbread House" chapter are essentially a recreation of her time spent in the 'care' of Wilson, who convinced himself that Jennifer was his late son, and her subsequent escape to the Orphanage with Wendy. Gregory Wilson's Shovel was one of the tools that reminded Jennifer of the fact that he was, regardless of what happened to his son, a farmer who made his living from the cultivation of peas.

Characteristics[]

The Shovel is better than the Steel Pipe in terms of overall attack power and speed, except the "Gingerbread House" has no Imps or boss battles for the player to worry about. Apart from the fact that the player must follow Wendy and avoid Gregory towards the end of the chapter, the Shovel's usefulness is extremely limited. In fact, the player can miss this weapon by not visiting the Garden and instead entering Gregory's farmhouse. The only time when the Shovel becomes relevant is in the combat sections of the next chapter, "Rag Princess Sews." And even then, the Shovel can be quickly replaced by the Sledgehammer, followed by the Rusty Sword/Knight Rapier or the Lumberjack Axe in "The Funeral."
