You're a disgrace. Nothing, worse than nothing! Your gift is worth NOTHING!
—Diana to Jennifer about her blue butterfly gift before shoving her to the floor

Diana is one of the orphans at Rose Garden Orphanage and a member of the Red Crayon Aristocrat Club. Ranked Duchess, she has the highest social placement in the Aristocracy and she is also the highest ranking member of the Red Crayon Aristocrat Club, under the Princess of the Red Rose.

She is the oldest member of the Red Crayon Aristocrat Club. While her age is uncertain, she is estimated to be in her mid-teens.

Appearance[]

Diana is a young pale girl around her mid-teens. Her most striking trait is her auburn curly hair. She also has freckles adorning her nose and blue piercing eyes. Her normal clothes consists of an oversized brown dress with tan stripes atop it, a green tie hanging from the collar, and brown dirty boots. When curtsying, a white bandage can be seen at her right leg.

Personality[]

Jennifer thought Diana was the prettiest and most "mature" of the Aristocrats, although Jennifer likely means mature in the physical aspect instead. Diana has been involved in acts of abuse, torture and cruelty against animals. She is seen beating something in a bag, involved with the death of a rat, was responsible for killing Eleanor's bird, and condoned the killing of Brown.

Diana is a very devious troublemaker and has a two-faced nature. She has badmouthed Eleanor and Meg, although she pretends to like them when she is in their presence. She once pulled a prank on Eleanor by stealing and killing her red bird. Afterwards, she and Meg made a bet to see if she would cry or get furious, which ended up with both of them losing since Eleanor did neither. After Meg gave her a love letter, Diana ripped it in half and stuffed it into a stuffed goat doll. When Meg learned of what had become of her letter, Meg only cried in Diana's arms, believing Jennifer did it.

DianaThrowsJennifer

"You're a disgrace. Nothing, worse than nothing! Your gift is worth NOTHING!"

Diana appears to have a strong dislike for Jennifer, likely due to the whole koi incident. Diana looks for any opportunity to bully her, torment her, make her feel terrible and ruin her self-esteem with insults. Diana is a proud, selfish and cruel girl in personality who often looks forward to punishing people as seen when Jennifer gave the Aristocrats the gift of a butterfly. Diana even goes as far as to stand up on a chair for the sake of being able to look down upon Jennifer, displaying her pride and making her feel inferior. Jennifer spoke poorly of her, saying that Diana was trapped by her own ideals. When Jennifer is declared the new Rose princess after she finally stands up for herself, Diana asks for Jennifer's forgiveness for her previous behavior and is willing to follow Jennifer's orders. How genuine this was is unknown.

Hoffman claims that Diana is his favorite to the point of having her watch over his koi fish. After said fish is killed, he proceeds to blame her as he suggestively carcasses her and proclaims no one would want to adopt her. Immediately after, Diana attempts smothering Jennifer with a towel, believing her to be the cause. Diana dreams of becoming an adult. She fears losing her ideal self and not growing up into the adult she wants, stemming from Hoffman's sexual abuse and her revulsion at this. Despite her dreams, Diana despises adults. Diana wears her dress and tie low that exposes some of her chest. This further suggests Hoffman's grooming similar to his relationship with the older Clara. With that in mind, she both dresses the way she does and enacts violent abuse on the other orphans due to having some form of power this way. In other words: her violence acts as an unjustly outlet for the abuse she faces.

Biography[]

It is unclear when Diana arrived at the orphanage, although she had clearly been there for a long while when Jennifer arrived.

Diana is the self-proclaimed leader of the Aristocrat Club under the Princess of the Red Rose. Although messages from the Rose Princess are given to Meg, it is usually Diana who dispenses punishments and rewards on the other members of the Club. Despite her arrogance and cruel tendencies, Diana appears content in following the Princess of the Rose's orders and does not seem to have any desire to take the position herself.

Diana learned about the legend of "Stray Dog" from Wendy. When Wendy issued a Rule of Rose to the other orphans not to speak to Jennifer to make her feel isolated, Diana obliged by ignoring Jennifer all the time. Wendy's final Rule of Rose to murder Jennifer's pet dog Brown was also partially obliged by Diana. Even after Jennifer violently lashes out at Wendy and shows her hatred towards the other orphans, Diana remains stoic.

Diana, along with the other orphans, chooses to elect Jennifer as their new Princess of the Red Rose, but shortly afterwards is murdered by Gregory M. Wilson as "Stray Dog" during the orphanage massacre.

Rule of Rose[]

Diana appears as a mental construct, as the game is a re-enactment of Jennifer's childhood set in her adult mind. As such, Diana is akin to a dream character. Diana is first seen beating something in a bag with a stick, perhaps Brown or a live animal. Diana is among the rest of the orphans who abduct Jennifer and take her to the airship.

On the airship, Diana is seen in various areas, mainly in the Sector 10 Crew Cabin sitting at the table. She is also seen in the Aristocrat Club meeting area where she attends the meetings and watches the punishments take place. For "Sir Peter," she is seen at the vip room taking care of Hoffman's fish. She will say to hurry or else Amanda will find Peter first. Once Jennifer is told to punish Amanda, Diana can be seeing kicking at the teen's back to force her.

In "Goat Sisters," Diana finds a love letter written by Meg. This infuriates her. She tears the letter into two pieces and attempted to feed it to a goat. When questioned by the wise-looking princess, Diana pretends to not know anything and feigns innocence. Jennifer soon finds both pieces... only for the trio to see her with it. Meg cries into Diana's arms who carcasses her. She then goes along with the Onion Bag punishment suggested by the blonde.

During the "Bird of Happiness" chapter, she and Meg steal Eleanor's dress and bird. They proceed to smother it and stuff the pet inside three separate boxes. After doing so, the girls call out Jennifer for ease-dropping. Diana claims if she doesn't hurry, Eleanor will cry which Meg refutes. Thus, they agree to make a bet out of her reaction. After Eleanor finds out, the two girls watch for her response... only for Eleanor to quietly take the bird's corpse and give it as a gift. The girls are left merely shrugging.

Her chapter is "The Mermaid Princess", which is also shared with Clara. Hoffman's koi goes missing. It is implied Eleanor and Meg took Hoffman's koi, sliced it in half, combined it with a doll to make the "Mermaid Doll" as mermaids do not really exist, and donated it as the Monthly Gift. Diana was in charge of caring for Hoffman's koi, so she was blamed by Hoffman. The chapter starts with her angrily hitting the wall with a room. Diana then searches for it, but her absence makes him suspect her of taking it.

After the defeat of the Mermaid Princess, Hoffman interrogated Diana about his koi to no avail. While interrogating a crying Diana, Hoffman began stroking her body suggestively and could be perceived as crossing the line on how much an adult should touch a child. When he leaves the room, Diana is clearly disgusted by his touch. Diana then blames Jennifer for the whole incident. In response for appearing bad in front of Hoffman, Diana took out her angeron Jennifer, smearing her face with a dirty rag.

Like the other kids, Diana ignores Jennifer during the “Funeral” chapter. She is also scorned by her once Brown is dead. When Jennifer dethrones Wendy, Diana apologizes for what she had done to her. However, before anything else can occur, Susan notices Wendy outside. Diana is thus later killed by Stray Dog.

Relationships[]

Meg[]

DianaFinger

Diana licking the blood on Meg's finger.

Diana is shown to be annoyed by Meg. She mentions her to be a pain to Eleanor and, after receiving her love letter, ripped it apart. She then uses said letter as an opportunity to blame Jennifer for it instead. When Meg is around her however, Diana pretends to care for her. She consoles her after the love letter incident and also works alongside her as a fellow aristocrat. The duo also teamed up to pull a prank on Eleanor.

As mentioned, Meg has a romantic crush towards Diana. She wrote a love letter to her in the Goat Sisters chapter and seems to idolize her. However, for the sake of the club, Meg was willing to kill Hoffman’s koi fish which caused Diana to be blamed. While Meg does care for her, she puts the club at a higher priority.

Despite her dislike, Diana is shown in the opening movie first causing Meg to prick her finger on an offered rose before Diana sucks on it. This alludes to Meg's feelings for Diana, Diana's awareness of this, as well as her compulsion to be cruel to others and put herself in a position of control over them.

Eleanor[]

Akin to Meg, Diana doesn’t look positively at Eleanor. While she is willing to vent to her about being annoyed about Meg, she also saw her as an annoyance. She went along with Meg’s plan to steal her clothes and kill her pet bird. Diana suspected she would cry after finding it. However, Eleanor instead silently took it as a gift for the aristocrat club. Because Eleanor doesn’t talk back and follows orders to a T, Diana has less of an issue with her.

Jennifer[]

Diana hates Jennifer. Diana has a constant need of portraying herself as being in control, with Jennifer being the primary victim. This is due to her low rank and the koi fish incident. For the latter case, Diana mistook Jennifer as the one to have killed Hoffman’s fish. She thus attempts smothering her with a dirty rag. In real life, Jennifer was also younger than Diana, adding onto the constant bullying.

As an adult, Jennifer has a sympathized look at her. She mentions her wanting to grow up and also finding her pretty. While she still experiences trauma from what she did, Jennifer is under the notion that none of the orphans deserved what happened during the massacre, Diana included. She more-so sees her neutrally.

Amanda[]

As one of the low-class members, Amanda is one of the members constantly tortured by the main trio. She acts submissive towards them and betrays Jennifer in hopes of approval. As such, Diana would constantly switch between nice or cruel to her. She thinks lowly of her. Amanda however fears her and the others.

Hoffman[]

Going off his list, Diana is Hoffman’s favorite orphan. As such, she is in charge of guarding and cleaning the fish tank. However, when said fish is killed by Meg and Eleanor, Hoffman’s attitude completely changes. He proceeds to suggestively stroke her body as he confronts her, then declares no one would want to adopt her. Diana is left disgusted by his touch. Like Clara, there are heavy implications of sexual assault between the two. As to how far it has gotten with Diana is unknown. It can be presumed though that the abuse he inflicts on her is what primarily causes her violent tendencies.

Etymology[]

  • The name Diana means "supplier (messenger) of beneficence and wellness" and/or "heavenly, divine"in Persian, which reflects Diana's vain, proud attitude and the fact she thinks she is more important than everyone else. In addition, Diana/Artemis was the goddess of virgins and maidens, and legends of her chastity are prominent in Roman/Greek myth. She preferred hunting and venturing into the woods to marrying and settling down to have children as many of the other goddesses did. This could reflect Diana in the game's own desire to remain 'pure'.
    • Diana is probably derived from an old Indo-European root meaning "heavenly, divine", which related to dyeus (Zeus). Diana was a Roman goddess of the moon, hunting, forests, and childbirth, often identified with the Greek goddess Artemis.
    • It is also worth noting that Diana's name, when spoken, begins with "die". If language is viewed from a more abstract perspective that affects the subconscious, Diana can be seen as someone associated with death, which may refer to her acts of animal cruelty.

Story Concepts[]

  • Diana’s early test model gives her a brighter shade of hair.[1]
  • There is an unused animation of Diana cleaning Hoffman's aquarium. It was likely removed since Diana wanted to search for the missing koi as soon as possible, and so it would not make sense for her to remain in the VIP room.[2]
  • There is unused audio of Diana talking about mermaids: "Each and every girl becomes a mermaid! You'll be a mermaid, too. A new daddy will come for us and we'll all be mermaids. Mr. Hoffman said I'd be a beautiful mermaid. And the king of Merland will come for me."[3]
  • Diana and Eleanor have an unused cutscene in the Goat Sisters chapter where Jennifer attempts asking why the letter is torn. They lie about not knowing and leave.[1]
