Chocolate is a healing item in Rule of Rose. It is a bar of milk chocolate containing milk, sugar, and cocoa. The cocoa solids are what gives Chocolate its distinct brown texture. It differs from White Chocolate inasmuch as the latter is devoid of any cocoa solids.
Background[]
Although Chocolate has been around in the centuries prior to the events of the game, it was not until the 19th century that it was finally mass-produced by confectionaries. The mass -production of Chocolate meant that children and adults alike could enjoy and experience the same confectionary. Chocolate was historically touted as a children's health item around this time, and it is possible that such perceptions continued well into the 20th century. Jennifer encounters a limited number of these items in the Airship and Orphanage. She may have taken some of them with her, convinced of its health benefits.
Characteristics[]
In terms of healing potency, Chocolate is rivaled by White Chocolate, with the latter only outclassing it by a small margin. It is less scarce than White Chocolate, so the player should be able to have more Chocolates in their Inventory or at the Rubbish Bin. Similar to White Chocolate, it would be best that the player no squander them and try to keep about two or three of them in reserve at the Rubbish Bin for boss battles and mandatory sections where they must fight groups of Imps in order to advance the plot.
Unlike White Chocolate, there is only one method of acquiring them. The only way is to have a Ribbon assigned to the Find Slot from the Inventory and issuing the Search Command to Brown. Having Chocolate in the Inventory can also be used to find the Broken Robots and Film 8/14.
Trivia[]
- For whatever reason, the player could barter a single Chocolate with the Gift Box in exchange for one of piece Candy. It is not recommended because Candy happens to be the worst healing item in the game.
- Originally, Chocolate was supposed to be the rarest and best-possible healing item. Its description, upon examination in the Inventory, implies that there was no other healing item superior to it.
- In the final release, Chocolate is outclassed by White Chocolate, but it was not meant to have been the case. In the game files, White Chocolate was supposed to have been the Gift of the Month for a June 1930 chapter that was ultimately cut from the game.
